A note on language choice and pronouns: Born Anna Pauline Murray in 1910, Pauli often chose not to use that given name and wrestled with issues of gender identity throughout life. Pauli regulary dressed and presented as male, particularly when younger, and attempted for decades to get hormone replacement therapy from medical professionals. Given ample evidence of a trans or nonbinary experience, Pauli has posthumously been identified by many as transgender. Pauli consistently indicated feeling “incompletely female,” and actively used the phrase “he/she personality.” In this chapter, I follow the lead of the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice and use s/he and they/them pronouns when discussing Pauli’s early life and she/her/hers when discussing Pauli’s later years, after the founding of the National Organization for Women. This is an attempt to follow Pauli’s expressed preferences, honor their status as a transgender pioneer, and avoid misgendering a person who contributed so much to the cause of gender equality. I hope this will help you, dear reader, embrace the magnificent journey of Pauli’s life with an open heart. 1
